According to the RKD he was the son of Elisabeth Mertens and Frans Francken I, who was his first teacher. He was entered into the books (liggeren) of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1607 as a pupil of his uncle Ambrosius. He influenced the painter Jacob van Hulsdonck. He was entered into the books (liggeren) of the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1607 as a pupil of his uncle Ambrosius. He influenced the painter Jacob van Hulsdonck.
