He was a sailor before enrolling at the academy in Düsseldorf from 1860-1865, studying under Oswald Achenbach, among others. He continued his training is Karlsruhe, first at the academy, and then as a private pupil of H. F. Gude, who had also been one of his teachers in Düsseldorf.
