Gutiérrez de la Vega was an academician of merit at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts and was appointed director of the Seville School of Fine Arts. He painted portraits of prominent figures such as Isabella II, the Marquis of Almonacid, Richard Ford, and Maria Cristina. He also produced religious and genre paintings.
