In 1890 he accompanied Tsesarevich Nikolai Aleksandrovich, future Emperor Nikolai II, on his Eastern Journey of 1890-1891. Asnieres, a particularly favored place for artists to painting including Van Gogh and Seurat, was among the subjects of Gritsenko's work showing his mastery of perspective, color, and painting en plein air.
