    Aart Johannes Cock was born on 13 May 1905 in Menado, Sulawesi, Indonesia. He attended the academy of art in The Hague and lived in Medan until 1939. Cock's works were exhibited in various art shows in Batavia and Medan, showcasing his modern style of painting characterized as pitiless analytical realism. After World War II, he lived in Makassar, Sulawesi, before settling in The Hague.
