    Alfred Bastien was born in 1873 in Ixelles, Brussels. At the beginning of his career as an artist he mainly created drawings in pencil and ink before he took on painting in oil. He visited numerous countries in Europe, North-Africa, the Belgian Congo, India, Japan, China and the islands of the South Pacific.

    During the First World War, the artist created many depictions of battle scenes, which were published on a regular basis. His paintings are exhibited at the Canadian War Museum and can be found in numerous European houses.
