Charles Michel-Ange Challe was a French artist who won the Prix de Rome in 1741 and studied at the French Academy in Rome. He was heavily influenced by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and worked during a period of artistic change in which there was a desire to break from old traditions and form a new style. Challe returned to Paris in 1749 and was appointed Professor of Perspective at the Académie Royale in 1758.
