  • Biography

Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala was a Spanish academic painter known for his finely rendered genre scenes and miniature-scale historical compositions. Born in Bilbao into a family of artists and intellectuals, Zamacois began his formal art education at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid before relocating to Paris in 1860.

In Paris, he studied under Charles Gleyre and later worked in the studio of Ernest Meissonier, whose meticulous style greatly influenced Zamacois's own approach. He formed close artistic friendships with Mariano Fortuny and gained early success exhibiting at the Paris Salons and Madrid National Exhibitions, where he received medals in 1862 and 1864.
