Emile Charles Wauters (1846-1933)

Born in Brussels, Nov. 19, 1846, he trained in Brussels in the studio of the decorator Charles Albert (1821-89) and then became a pupil of painter Jean-François Portaels. In 1867 he spent six months in the studio of Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris, subsequently visiting Italy and Germany. On his return to Brussels he showed his Battle of Hastings at the Salon of 1869 and, three years later, caused a stir with another large, dramatic historical composition, the Insane Painter Hugo van der Goes at the Monastery of Roode (Brussels, Mus.
