Son of the Irish William "Guillermo" Butler and the Italian Maria Batto, adopted the name of his father when entering the Order of Preachers of Santo Domingo de Guzmán in 1896. After his ordination he studied painting with Emilio Caraffa, and in 1908 he traveled to Europe where he studied with Desiré López.
