In the 1820's, Kiærskou studied at the royal academy in his hometown. One of his teachers was Christopher Wilhelm Eckersberg.
Later in his life, he was a professor at the academy in Copenhagen. The artist traveled to the north (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) and to the south (Germany, Switzerland, Italy).
His oeuvre, which is influenced by his many journeys, shows mainly mountain and river landscapes, as well as coastal scenery. Occasionally they show the atmosphere of the evening, or a winter scene.
