    Georg Philipp Rugendas the Younger was born in Augsburg, Germany, and was the eldest son of the famous artist Georg Philipp Rugendas d. Ä. He started his career with animal pieces, Italianate landscapes, and soldier pictures, and later became an engraver in his father's workshop. He employed his own son Johann Georg Lorenz as an employee. Rugendas the Younger's watercolor of an Affenpinscher, a breed of dog originally bred to hunt rats and mice, is believed to have come from the same sketchbook as another watercolor depicting two playing leopards. The artist flourished in the 18th century.
