Castello Giovanni Battista
  • Biography

Giovanni Battista Castello was a pupil of Luca Cambiaso (1527-1585), the most famous Genoese painter of the sixteenth century, but he established himself as a miniaturist, enjoying international success thanks to his refined tempera painted sheets.

In 1584 he was hired by Emperor Philip II to create the royal choirs of the Escorial and Margaret of Austria, queen consort of Philip III, commissioned him in 1599 to make a copy of the famous icon kept in the church of San Bartolomeo degli Armeni. Documented again in Genoa from 1590, the Castle reached the height of its activity and fame, creating small but elegant religious subjects that Soprani praised for their 'wonderful colorfulness'.
