    German painter Heinrich Franz Gaudenz von Rustige was born in Werl / North Rhine-Westphalia in 1810.

    Rustige studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf under the direction of Wilhelm Schadow (from 1828). After graduation, in 1836 he moved to Frankfurt, from where he often went on numerous study trips, including to Vienna and Hungary, to Dresden, Berlin, France and England.

    In 1845 Rustige became a professor at the Artistic School (Kunstschule) in Stuttgart where he taught until 1887. He was also the director of the Dutch State Gallery (Staatsgalerie) of Württemberg. For merits for art and science, in 1890 he was appointed an honorary citizen of his home town of Werl.
