Biography
Italian painter. With the gradual disappearance of the great Venetian masters of the 16th century, Jacopo Negretti became the city's most prominent and renowned artist. He trained within his family, being the son of Antonio Negretti and the great-nephew of Palma Vecchio, and also spent a brief period in Titian's workshop. He worked in Urbino at the invitation of Duke Guidobaldo, whom he had met in Venice in 1564. Also at the Duke's behest, he later traveled to Rome, arriving in 1567, before returning to Venice in 1570. Although this Venetian sojourn must have been brief, his permanent settlement in the lagoon city did not occur until 1578, when he was commissioned to paint two works for the Hall of the Great Council in the Doge's Palace....
