About Jean Baptiste Charles Claudot

  • Biography

Jean Baptiste Charles Claudot was a landscape painter from Lorraine. The son of a lawyer at the sovereign court of Lorraine, Claudot became a pupil of Jean Girardet and André Joly and later he went to Paris to finish his studies with the celebrated painter Claude-Joseph Vernet. Claudot’s stay in Paris was brief, however, for he returned to Nancy in 1765. The lasting influence of Vernet and his Italianate landscapes were to be of fundamental importance in the development of Claudot’s own landscape paintings.
