    John Closterman was born in 1660 in Osnabrück, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. He trained under his artist father and later worked under François de Troy in Paris. In 1680, he arrived in London and was employed by John Riley as a painter of draperies. After Riley's death, Closterman's demand soared and he became a prominent portrait painter in literary and artistic circles. He was patronized by the Spanish court and painted full-length portraits of Carlos II and Maria Ana of Neuberg. He also collected old master drawings and expanded his knowledge of classical antiquities in Rome. Upon his return to England in 1702, his demand amongst the nobility had increased further.
