Johann Bernhard Clombeck, Johann Bernhard Klombeck
  • Biography

The landscape painter Johann Bernhard Klombeck's life remained connected to his home town of Kleve. Born as the son of master tailor Heinrich Klombeck, he was artistically encouraged early on by the half-brother of his mother, the painter Matthias Klevener Tinthoff. It is likely that the latter sent the young painter to the Drawing Academy founded in 1841 by the Dutch landscape painter Barend Cornelis Koekkoek.

Following his teacher's example, Klombeck devoted his painting to the representation of forest land and landscapes, capturing the changing seasons on canvas. He also took Koekkoek's compositional and stylistic features, but worked in a more pastoral than in Koekkoek's typical heroic style.
