    Johannes Christian Deiker was a German painter born in Wetzlar in 1822. He attended the State Academy of Drawing in Hanau and the Städelschule in Frankfurt. He worked as a court painter for Prince Ferdinand zu Solms-Braunfels in Braunfels, where he painted portraits, landscapes, and animal and hunting motifs. He gained increasing fame for his finely painted and detailed depictions of animals, which he presented successfully in exhibitions in Düsseldorf, Dresden, Berlin, and Munich. He traveled to Antwerp for study visits and became acquainted with genre painting, but stuck to his lifelike depictions of animals.
