    Lilias Torrance Newton LL.D., RCA, CGP, BHG (1896 – 1980)

    An important and influential 20th Century Canadian painter, draftsman and educator, Lilias Torrance Newton (nee Torrance) was born in Montréal (Lachine), Quebec and died in Cowansville, Quebec (about 50 miles south east of Montreal). She was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts* and of the Canadian Group of Painters*; and, she exhibited with the Group of Seven*. Her works were also featured in exhibitions at prominent foreign museums such as the National Gallery, Washington, D.C.; the Tate Gallery, London; and the Musée du Jeu de Paume, Paris, France.
