    A Polish-born painter, known primarily for watercolors but who also did many oil paintings, Gierymski Maksymilian was born in Warsaw Poland and was the older brother of well-known Polish painter, Aleksander Gierymski. In his painting, he was much influenced by the French Barbizon School. He spent most of his career in Germany, and died at age 28 in Bavaria.

    In 1865, Gierymski studied in Warsaw for several months under Rafal Hadziewicz (1803-86) and Chrystian Breslauer (1805-82), and he was also influenced by the work of Juliusz Kossak, with whom he was acquainted.

    His earliest landscape oils date from this period and include forest landscapes as well as military scenes such as Artillery on the Gallop (1867)...
