Margherita Caffi was born in 1650 in Cremona. Caffi was the student and perhaps nephew of Vincenzo Volo. Margherita married Ludovico Caffi, an artist specialized in flower and carpet paintings. Margherita was active in Cremona, Piacenza from 1670 - 1682 and then in Milan. While the number of paintings in the Medici collections suggest a Florentine stay. Margherita was active in Cremona, Piacenza from 1670 - 1682 and then in Milan. While the number of paintings in the Medici collections suggest a Florentine stay. Certainly her critical and commercial fortune was very rapid and her paintings are mentioned in almost all the ancient inventories of the Lombard and Emilian area. There is no doubt that her art marks the eighteenth-century turning point for the naturamortistic genre, thanks to the loose drafting and the fringed brushstrokes in a style that also contaminates the production of Elisabetta... There is no doubt that her art marks the eighteenth-century turning point for the naturamortistic genre, thanks to the loose drafting and the fringed brushstrokes in a style that also contaminates the production of Elisabetta Marchioni (active in Rovigo in the second half of the seventeenth century).
