    Otto Werner Henning Kameke was born in 1826 in Prussia and became a German painter and graphic artist whose career developed out of an early life in the military. Kameke first served as a Prussian officer before devoting himself entirely to painting in 1860. His transition from military life to the arts marked the beginning of a long and disciplined career shaped by academic training and extensive travel.

    Kameke spent the years 1860 to 1862 in Rome, where he deepened his study of landscape and figure painting. From 1862 to 1872 he lived in Weimar, studying under Arnold Böcklin, Ferdinand Michaelis, and Stanislaus von Kalckreuth, artists who influenced his approach to composition, atmosphere, and the expressive possibilities of colo...
