About Pieter Jansz Coopse

  • Biography

Pieter Coopse was born in Emden in 1630. He was a proud representative of the marine painters of the Flemish Golden Age. He studied under Ludolf Backhuysen and practiced alongside Ludolf Bakhuizen who inspired him greatly. As a good pupil and attentive observer, he went to the ships to observe the slightest movements of the sea from the real world. His work mainly presents scenes of battles and storms during which the tearing of the waves smashes the ships, leaving only a few pieces of wood floating on which he can proudly display his monogram "PC".
