    Vicente Rodés y Arias was a prominent Spanish portrait painter of the first half of the 19th century known for his exceptional use of pastel technique. His work was not widely seen until a monographic exhibition in 2019 at the Museo de Bellas Artes de Valencia, which brought to light previously unseen pieces from private collections. Rodés' talent as a portrait painter was recognized in Barcelona, where he settled permanently in 1820. He developed his unique style in the portrait genre between 1821 and 1834, distancing himself from his artistic influences. One of his notable works is the portrait of Mariquita, showcasing his skill as a draughtsman and his ability to capture intimacy in his subjects.
