    Václav Brožík was a Czech-born painter, art historian, and professor of painting. A major figure in history painting in the second half of the 19th century, he is recognized in the Czech Republic and France as a history painter and portraitist.

    From a poor family, Václav Brožík was born in Prague in 1851. He studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts under Professor Emil Lauffer. He then continued his training in Germany at the Dresden College of Fine Arts and at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. He moved to Paris in 1876 and studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in the studio of Bonnat and Gérôme and took part in the Paris Salon, where he mainly exhibited paintings illustrating the history of his native Bohemia.
