Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels (1833-1913) was the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, between 1878 and 1880, followed by a second tenure between 1897 and 1999. Born as the son of the philosopher Johann Peithner von Lichtenfels (1793-1866) in Vienna, he completed his studies under Franz Steinfeld and Thomas Ender at the local academy. Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels (1833-1913) was the director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, between 1878 and 1880, followed by a second tenure between 1897 and 1999. He was also professor of landscape painting, between 1872 and 1901. Born as the son of the philosopher Johann Peithner von Lichtenfels (1793-1866) in Vienna, he completed his studies under Franz Steinfeld and Thomas Ender at the local academy. He spent one year in Dusseldorf in 1857 and became a member of the artist's association 'Malkasten'. His students were, for instance, Ferdinand Andri, Wilhelm Bernatzik and Heinrich Tomec.
