A text-based painting in the 1987 Whitney Biennial brought them wide attention. Titled A Friend of Dorothy, 1943, it was composed entirely of old-time homosexual slurs: fairy, pansy, nellie, etc. Although in the present era of same-sex marriage, it’s easy to forget the stir...
