Active in Winnipeg and Toronto, Canada, Frank Johnston was briefly a member of the Group of Seven, led by Lawren Harris (1885-1970), which held to doctrines of painting that emphasized commitment to national subjects and spiritual interpretation of these subjects, frequently landscapes. His style was impressionist, and one of his most successful paintings is titled Fire-swept, Algoma of 1920, which he completed on a painting trip to the wilderness of Ontario with Harris and J. W.G. (Jock) Macdonald (1897-1960). These men were highly influential on Johnston's painting.
