Franz Seraph Stirnbrand (1788-1882) was born in Croatia and grew up in Linz, where he began his education as a decoration painter at the age of 17. He fled from military service to Germany and worked in Frankfurt a.M. from 1809-1812, where he painted portraits of Napoleon, his wife Marie Louise and other representatives of high aristocracy on tobacco tins.
