At the end of April 1885, five artists crossed the Atlantic with the steamer "Fulda" and came to Milwaukee. August Lohr from Munich, Friedrich Wilhelm Heine and Berhard Schneider from Dresden, and Hermann von Michalowski and Franz Rohrbeck from Berlin. Lohr had his family and maid with him, Heine left his family in Dresden, the others were bachelors. There was also a male model Klötzer. This group arrived in Milwaukee to paint for the American Panorama Company of William Wehner huge circular canvasses with scenes from the Civil war and later of religious motifs.
