He became the major exponent of Precisionism, a style of painting that emphasizes clean-cut lines, simple forms and large areas of flat color---creating a sense of order and 'precision', and a suggestion that the lines of those industrial structures cut through people lives psychologically. Sheeler was born in Philadelphia and studied there at the School of Industrial Art, from 1900/01 to 1901/02. He was awarded Certificate A in Industrial Drawing in 1901, and Certificate B in Decorative Painting and Applied Art in 1902. He then studied with... Read full biography
