He attended highschool in Fez, the third largest city in Morocco and then the Academy of the Arts in that city. In 1952, awarded a scholarship, he enrolled in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and later attended the Academy Julian. Returning to Morocco in 1955, he moved to Rabat and shortly after attempted suicide and was placed in a psychiatric hospital and from that time had problems with that type of illness.
