Van der Meulen was a Flemish battle, genre, and landscape painter. He was a student of the court painter Pieter Snayers (c. 1592-1666/67), highly esteemed by the aristocracy, and through him became acquainted with battle painting. In the service of the French king, he became a depictionist of the sieges and campaigns in which he participated in his retinue. He participated in nine journeys during which he visited the scenes of events either directly or afterwards and recorded them in drawings.... Read full biography
