From 1889-90 he was a student of the School of Applied Arts in Hamburg and from 1890-94 studied at the Berlin Art Academy under W. Friedrich. Schaper was a founding member of the "Hamburg Künstlerclub 1897", honorary member of the "Hamburg artistry" and a member of the Berlin Secession. He was also the head of State drawing and painting courses for teachers in Hamburg. After his marriage in 1903, Schaper lived in the United Borstel. From 1916-18 he was deployed in Husum and Sylt.
