Lopes began his career in his father's studio and had his first job at the Fábrica de Cerâmica das Devesas. He studied at the Academia Portuense de Belas-Artes, where he was a student of António Soares dos Reis and João Marques de Oliveira. In his third year of the course, in 1885, he was a scholarship holder in Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts. Here, he obtained several awards.
