Maclet (whose birth name was Jules-Emile Elisee Maclet) was born on April 12, 1881, in Lyons-en-Santerre in the Picardy region of northern France, the son of a laundress and a gardener. From an early age he worked as an assistant to his father, who served as sexton for the parish church, where Elisee was a choirboy.
