Author Henry Fleckenstein had done a lengthy review of the Cobb family history in his "Southern Decoys of Virginia and the Carolinas", and in that book states Elkanah helped run the large and very successful Cobb Island Hotel, plus additional family businesses with his father and other family members. The main hotel, like most of the Island, was completely devastated by the great storm of 1893. After that tragic event, Nathan Jr. and Elkanah built a smaller 'watch house' type structure on pilings, which they named the Cobb Island Club House.
