Imogen Cunningham was born in Portland, Oregon on April 12, 1883. While at the University of Washington, Cunningham was inspired by the work of Gertrude Käsebier to take up photogrphy. After gradating in 1907, she went to work with Edward S. Curtis in his Seattle studio. After further study in Dresden at the Technische Hochschule, she returned to Seattle and opened a photography studio.
