It depicts one of his favourite subjects – a still life of smoking requisites, or a toebackje, as they were called in seventeenth-century Holland. A broken brazier containing glowing coals, a metal tobacco box and a slender white clay pipe appear on a cracked stone ledge: a small pile of glowing ash has fallen from the bowl of the pipe onto the stone ledge.
