In the 1950s, he turned away from open structures to enclosed volumes with a more obvious human presence, often seeming to be caught in a suspended wiry structure. During the last 10 years of his career, he abandoned steel and worked in bronze depicting larger-than-life-size female nudes. In a lecture in 1962, he introduced the term "postmodern" into art vocabulary, predicting the injection of figurative work into total abstraction.
