From 1940-43 he held an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, and then from 1943-46 served in the military. From 1947-52 he was active as a furniture varnisher. In the years 1953-55 he attended the workers and farmers faculty in Weimar, and then from 1955-60 studied at the University of Fine Arts in Dresden with Erich Fraaß and Paul Michaelis.
