Born in Amsterdam, he was educated in The Hague and went on to become of the leading Dutch landscape artists of his generation. His style owes much to the Hague School with it's strong use of silvery greys but he always worked with denser use of pigment and great clarity of line which make for a style more typical of the early 20th century. His style owes much to the Hague School with it's strong use of silvery greys but he always worked with denser use of pigment and great clarity of line which make for a style more typical of the early 20th century.
