    Adolf Helmberger was born in Sankt Gilgen in Austria and studied in Salzburg at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna. His teachers were Christian Griepenkerl (1839-1912) and Alois Delug (1859-1930). From 1922 onwards he was a member of the artist's cooperative in Vienna.

    At the onset of the First World War, Helmberger volunteered as a war painter - he was excluded from service as an active soldier due to a hearing loss- and was stationed on the Russian and Italian fronts. Besides his numerous landscape paintings, Helmberger also created several war paintings, which are among his best-known works.
