He taught architecture, painting and aesthetics in the United States and Uruguay at Columbia University, Ohio University, Escuela Municipal de Arte Dramatico (Montevideo), Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. In 1962, he was Visiting Andrew Mellon Professor of Art at the Carnegie Institute.
Halty obtained a Bachelor's Degree in mathematics at the Académie de Poitiers, France, in 1935, and received his Master's in Architecture at the University of Montevideo in 1940.
