    Adriaan Herman Gouwe, born in Alkmaar in 1875, was a Dutch painter known for his luminist palette and colorful, expressive style. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and traveled extensively to France, Spain, and North Africa. Gouwe gained recognition for his paintings of Limburg landscapes and ploughing horses. His success led to him feeling enslaved by commercial demands, prompting him to flee to Tahiti in 1927.
