    Albert Mertz was born in 1920. He was only 13 years old when he first exhibited at Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling in 1936. From 1936 to 1938 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Aksel Jørgensen. He experimented with pointillism and surrealism before turning to film-making and shooting Denmark's first experimental film, Flugten (1942). In the late 1940s, Albert Mertz became one of the leading artists in Line II and worked in a simplified constructivist style with a limited number of strong colors. In the late 1950s, he associated with the German-born Arthur Köpcke who opened a gallery in Copenhagen that became popular with artists working with Fluxus and Neo-Dada.
