Alec Mingelmanganu is regarded as one of the masters of Wanjina painting, alongside Charlie Numbulmoore, Wattie Karruwara and Mickey Bunguni. His works, both in scale and manner, have their genesis in the rock paintings of the Kimberley, where Mingelmanganu was responsible for the maintenance of various important sites.

Whilst the artist's early works were primarily executed on bark, in 1979 Mary Macha encouraged a number of artists to move away from bark and paint on canvas and board. Durable and more easily interpreted by collectors, Mingelmanganu specifically requested large-scale surfaces in order to retain the 'monumental' effect of his subjects.
