In the autumn of 1939, he began studying architecture at the Lviv Polytechnic and at the same time began to paint under the supervision of Wladyslaw Lama. Under both occupations, Soviet and Nazi, he took up paid jobs, continuing his studies as much as he could. In 1944 he was sent to forced labor in Vienna, from where he escaped to Yugoslavia.
