An American Impressionist*, Alexande Bower was born in New York, studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art*, and was living with his wife in Cliff Island, Maine by 1914. Despite his urban upbringing, the coast and the sea fascinated Bower. A large portion of his paintings are seascapes, particularly scenes depicting the coast of Cape Elizabeth and Cliff Island, Maine.
Bower was a member of the Salmagundi Club*, the Philadelphia Watercolor Club*, and the Boston Society of Watercolor Painters, as well as being an associate member of the National Academy of Design*.
He exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, the National Academy of Design, the Art Institute of Chicago, and The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art.
His works are in the collection of the Springfield Art Museum, the Butler Art Institute, the Sweat Memorial Art Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, and the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine.
Bower was not only a painter but also the Director of the Sweat Memorial Art Museum and Director of the School of Fine and Applied Art (both in Portland, Maine), a trustee at Westbrook College in Portland, Maine, and an art instructor at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.

Exhibited at Panama-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco, 1915? “Alexander Bower, noted artist, came to Santa Cruz in 1915 and conducted classes and brought paintings from ‘Monhegan’ which depicted its beauty.” per Santa Cruz Sentinel, April 2, 1957, page 16.

Exhibited Loma Pueta [sic. Prieta], Santa Cruz, National Academy of Design, N.Y., 1920, no. 65. One of his paintings is in the second traveling exhibit from the Santa Cruz Art League that went to Klamath Falls, Ore. where it was shown under the auspices of the DAR and other orgs., per Santa Cruz Evening News, March 5, 1931, page 3, and article adds that Alexander Bower of New York has “been making his home in California for some time”.
His painting, Lengthening Shadows, lent by the M. C. Halls, was in the Retrospective Exhibition at the Santa Cruz Art League, January, 1958, per Santa Cruz Sentinel, January 8, 1958, page 22.
